Visit to Antietam National Battlefield

Because of its national park status, Star Group students, along with their teachers, advisors, and a Civil War expert went to Antietam National Battlefield. The students’ visit coincided with the 139th anniversary of the actual battle itself.

The day started with a short presentation explaining details of the battle. The students were also shown an antique muzzle loader and repeating rifle from the Civil War.

While at Antietam, the students traveled to the major points of the battle and ended on Burnside’s Bridge, home to one of the biggest blunders of the war. The students were asked to reenact Burnside’s troops’ charge across the small bridge to get a feel for the style of fighting the soldiers endured. And finally, most of the students attempted to ford the river, just the way the troops had done.
